Am I allowed to take my rental vehicle into a bordering country such as Namibia and Botswana?
Rentals Originating in South Africa
In order to take your rental vehicle outside of South Africa, you will need to request permission from our partner, Woodford Car Hire. Once you have completed a car hire reservation, take note of the booking number, and use the online form to submit a request. The online form will list the costs for each country visited and the documentation required for you to submit as part of the review.
Once your request has been accepted or declined, you will receive confirmation. Sometimes additional documentation will be requested. As soon as a vehicle has been assigned to your reservation, you will receive an authorization document which you can print and present to the border authorities. If your request is declined, any monies paid towards your cross-border application will be refunded to you.
You can request cross-border authorization at the rental counter, but the process of approval can take a few days, so it is best to apply ahead of time in order for clearance to be obtained in time.
